🔍 I’m not a software programmer. I’m a chartered accountant with 30 years in finance. I just built two AI-powered apps - without writing a single line of code.
I do have strong analytical skills and I do use R-based data science tools when it can assist. The rest of the time I’m in MS Office and ERP land.
It started with Ed Donner’s great Udemy courses on AI engineering and Agentic AI (https://www.udemy.com/user/ed-donner-3/). I can’t recommend them highly enough.
Armed with that knowledge, Claude and I built:
📊 SEC Corporate Research Assistant - multi-agent system analysing 10-K/10-Q/20-F filings (~$0.30 per company)
🍹 AI Liquor Cabinet Manager - in Next.js (a framework I don’t even know!)
These were just test projects, not particularly work related, although I have been wanting to get ‘easier’ information from SEC filings for a long time (without spending the money for fancy tool-sets). The Liquor Cabinet Manager arose on Christmas morning, when we could not find the white rum for the strawberry daiquiris - so a fun ‘Christmas Daiquiri Disaster emergency response’ project Claude and I started on Boxing Day and had finished by stumps.
Andrej Karpathy gave us “vibe coding.” I’m calling what I do “vibe analytics”, borrowed from Andrej and an MIT Sloan Management Review article, which is explained in more detail in my blog.
Essentially I am using a similar approach to solve different problems. Talking to AI, Claude Code Sonnet/Opus 4.5 in my case, to research analytical project ideas:
- Rationality Check - am I off my tree?
- Practicality - Can it be done, given time/resources/budget
- What has been done to date?
- Is there enough data?
- What approaches might work?
- and only then what toolsets can/should we use. Could be an app … might just be a spreadsheet
- let’s put together a plan!
- Do it.
For finance professionals, analysts, and anyone who works with data - this is our moment. The barrier between question and insight is dissolving. Not because AI always has all the answers (although it often thinks it does), but because AI can help us build the exact tools we need to find them. Even if AI does get it right on its own, transparency and verifiability and replicability are still required - we need a stable audit trail.
But AI can work very quickly, not just to do the analysis but to build in all the checks and balances that are required, on both new projects and old projects (thinking especially here of the 10-15 year old spreadsheets living in just about every finance process I have ever looked at 😱).
Still early days, but we are officially off and running.
